Artist Statement
Christa Faas is a designer who uses her multifaceted skills in composition and illustration to create conceptual pieces that are layered and personal to her. Her thesis publication, Room 232: Hotels & Escapism, is a concept-based book that is centered around the metaphorical significance of hotels in current culture, highlighting the ideas of romance, rendezvous, and rejuvenation through the grand scope of escapism and liminal space.
Hotels are places for people to realize their deepest desires and vulnerabilities without creating something of permanence. They allow access to glamour and creature comforts some may never again experience. They represent play, new experiences, and transition. Identities turn into room numbers and finger prints are washed away in anticipation of the next guest check in. Each chapter idea is represented through analytical text and conceptual collaged and illustrated imagery that relates back to "different states of being" (physical, mental, and emotional) that are present when one might stay in a hotel.
