Artist Statement
Gavin Hutchinson is a multimedia artist specializing in the creation of puppets, currently living in Haddon Township, NJ. From an early age, they were encouraged to create and explore the art world by their father, a traditional artist who received his degree in graphic design from the Art Institute of Philadelphia and his BFA from Drexel. It was also his father who introduced him to video games, his first love. He practiced reading by guiding his father's playthroughs of Tomb Raider for the PS1 through the use of online guides and walkthroughs, and soon developed a love of video games. Throughout his academic career, he continued to create, using art as an outlet for childhood trauma, abuse and mental illness.
Gavin graduated from Camden Catholic High School and attended Moore College of Art & Design to pursue a career in video game development. The more he learned the more his interest shifted elsewhere—specifically, backward. In a world now populated with 3D elements and CGI, he began to look back on the days of practical effects and puppetry with awe. By reconnecting with the past, new life was breathed into Gavin's work. Gavin continues to study the art of puppetry and practical effects, and their senior thesis consists of puppets of various mediums and uses. He intends to continue creating creatures of all sizes, shapes and colors for as long as he can.
