Artist Statement
My work aims to show the beautiful side of decay and the growth that can come with it. A major theme in my work is hair. I think hair can be an interesting material to discuss decay with, as hair can either decay or stick around long after we are gone, depending on how we treat it. Many tend to deny decomposition, or hide away from it, despite its inevitability. People also tend to treat dismembered hair the same way, either they are repulsed or intrigued. Just as I am taking the hair and transforming it into a new artwork, I want to take the concept of decay and alter the way we so often view it. It also shows that even though decomposition may completely transform something, parts of the past can and will stick around through mementos, memories and more. My imagery is inspired mostly by eco-friendly end of life options such as green burials and human composting, to come to terms with my own eventual decay, and to not shy away from it.
