Art by e bond ’96 is featured along with 43 other women artists and writers in REI’s publication Force of Nature: A Collection of Art & Stories Celebrating Fearless Women.

“They wanted our take on how we define ‘outside’ as the largest playing field on earth,” bond posted on social media. ‘I think anyone who truly knows me knows how I feel about a certain group of trees and how they have changed my entire life, so needless to say, this project was a perfect gift.”

Bond, who was a Graphic Design major at Moore, moved to California about five years ago for her MFA program and her thesis ended up being about the state’s giant redwood trees. “I kind of became obsessed,” she said. “This is a set of trees that only exist here on the planet.”

The huge trees informed a lot of her work, including the REI piece, which is her interpretation of mapping a forest.

The catalog comes a year after REI launched a movement called Force of Nature, ‘showing what gender equality in the outdoors could and should be’ through sharing stories, working to close the gaps in women’s gear, investing in nonprofits and creating communities that help get more women outside.

The publication will land in inboxes, mailboxes and women’s hands nationwide ‘to spark conversation, touch hearts and minds, and inspire a new generation,’ according to the REI website.

Bond, who taught bookmaking, type, Photoshop and package design as an adjunct professor at Moore, is a web designer for GAP’s homepages. She loves the idea of the Force of Nature project and giving back to communities.

“I find myself utterly smitten to be on the pages with these women writers, artists and nature lovers,” bond said.
