Kendyl Boyd's Superpowers:
- Nourishing others through food and the power of plants and herbs
- Staying on beat and being able to bust a move at any time
- Remaining connected to my inner child (which really helps in the classroom!)
Kendyl Boyd ’21 is an Art Education alum, educator and fine artist. After graduation, Boyd wanted to explore an “array of interests,” and first took on a community engagement role at a museum in Philadelphia. It wasn’t too long, though, before her enthusiasm for teaching drew her back to the classroom.
Boyd thought back to her time as a student teacher at Moore and realized that she missed working with children. She now teaches second grade at Friends Select School, which happens to be located just a few blocks away from Moore, where Boyd’s journey as an educator began.
“Moore prepared me well for this experience in that, as an Art Education student, I had a lot of opportunities to work with young people and observe classrooms, which gave me a lot of field insight into the age group that I would want to work with, and that I would work best with,” Boyd says. “It also helped me to realize that a school setting was where I wanted to be at this point in my career.”
Boyd’s advice for current students is to take advantage of learning experiences like these as much as possible. “Take advantage of the opportunities that your professors and others around you bring to your attention,” she says. “It will help you learn a lot about the field in different ways.”
Outside of the classroom, Boyd serves on Moore’s Board of Managers and makes time to create art in a variety of mediums, primarily focusing on printmaking and collage. Since graduating from Moore, her work has been shown at the Carnation Contemporary gallery in Portland, Oregon and featured in Berm, a contemporary art magazine.
