Moore’s first-years enjoyed a picnic lunch on Race Street and Aviator Park on a sunny day for Fall Convocation 2018.
First, they were welcomed during a ceremony in Graham Auditorium by President Cecelia Fitzgibbon, who told them to study hard, do their work and be inspired.
“We cannot imagine a world without ideas and art, so put those ideas to work by being active, intellectually curious citizens,” she said. Fitzgibbon also welcomed transfer students and graduate students.
The Class of 2022 comprises 130 new students from 14 states, as well as a student from China.
Guest speaker was Moore 2018 Distinguished Alumna Janice Merendino ‘74, founder and director of the Branch Out Project in Philadelphia.
“I encourage you to blur your boundaries, spend time with the things that scare you and invent new ways of learning and doing,” she told the incoming class.
Student Government President Yesenia Lopez ’19 encouraged the new students to “just say ‘yes’ to great opportunities.”
“Go explore new places and experience all of what Philadelphia has to offer,” said Lopez, a Photography & Digital Arts major. “I promise it is worth it to get out of your comfort zone.”
