Who says sculpture class only has to be about marble busts and clay figures?

Junior Fine Arts major Marley Richardson decided to have fun with her assignment to create a soft sculpture from fabric for her "Soft" class, taught by adjunct professor Emilio Maldonado. She took some cotton, polyester fiberfill, pillow feathers, fabric, styrofoam, plastic cups and clay and made two of what she called "a worm on a string." Remember Squirmles? "They're making a comeback," said Richardson.

Looking more like an imaginary friend than a sculpture, Oh Worm? is a 7-foot-long aqua-and-orange-striped creature with plastic-cup googly eyes. Clay balls rolling around inside the cups give the worm a comical look. His smaller sidekick, Raspberry Cheesecake, is made of soft fuchsia, gray and white fabric. He's stuffed with cotton and has styrofoam eyes.

Richardson also created a film for the class, featuring her with the larger worm.

"It's a cheesy montage of me and the long worm growing old together," she said.

The worms accompanied Richardson to the Dining Hall, where they got a lot of hugs and attention from fans. Richardson didn't want to be dragging Oh Worm? around to too many places, though.

"There's going to be feathers everywhere," she said.
