If not for a broken elevator at Moore, Class of 2021 valedictorian Christa Faas may have graduated from a different school.
"My uncle does elevator maintenance, and at one point he fixed one of the elevators at Moore," she said. "He told my dad about the school. I was applying to colleges and my dad said, 'Your uncle told me about them and they seem cool, they do art stuff.' I'm like, OK, I'll give it a shot. And then here we are."
Faas, a Graphic Design major and Business minor, started taking her talent more seriously in high school.
"Senior year I quit sports and took three or four art classes, which was a little crazy, looking back on it," she said. She took AP Art and a Design for Business course, which introduced her to graphic design.
"I liked the idea of packaging and poster design, but I liked the bare minimum of it," she said. "Then, as I started to get more into it and learning more about graphic design, I realized this was something I had an actual interest in."
REACH OUT
While the pandemic put a halt to a number of things for her senior year, Faas said it helped her make great friendships.
"We formed a bond and that was a very nice thing to have," she said. "I was very fortunate to have those people with me throughout this uncertain time."
Her advice for the students she leaves behind—"Be open to things that you can learn within the school itself, because there's so much that you can obtain."
"You could be majoring in fashion, but you have an interest in ceramics, or you have an interest in jewelry design," she said. "There's so much really great equipment and programs that you can get involved with. Reach into all areas because you might find something that you like that you may not have thought you did."
