Artists and art lovers got a first look September 18 at the Leeway Foundation's exhibition Making Space: Leeway @ 25, celebrating the organization's 25 years of supporting artists, cultural producers and organizers in Philadelphia and beyond.

Moore President Cecelia Fitzgibbon addressed the gathering, which toured the curated selection of artworks by former Leeway grant recipients, as well as historical materials that recognize Leeway’s impact.

"I am very proud and pleased to host this show, and it's good for our students," Fitzgibbon said. Moore students collaborated with the Leeway on a special research project in anticipation of the anniversary exhibition. The project provided an educational case study for the students, and many of their ideas about curation and exhibition design were incorporated into Leeway's planning process.

Leeway Foundation Executive Director Denise M. Brown welcomed artists Michelle Angela Ortiz '00 and Mary DeWitt to the preview. The subject of one of DeWitt's pieces, Paulette Carrington, who spent 40 years in prison, is expected to attend the exhibition opening September 20 at the Galleries at Moore. The opening reception will kick off with a special Conversations @ Moore event, featuring South African photographer and filmmaker Zanele Muholi and local artists from the Women's Mobile Museum.

This free event is co-presented by Moore's Graduate Studies in Socially-Engaged Art program, the Leeway Foundation and the Philadelphia Photo Arts Center.
