Philadelphia, PA – Five Moore College of Art & Design Master of Fine Art candidates present their work in the 2019 MFA Thesis Exhibition from March 29 to April 13, 2019, at The Galleries at Moore, 1916 Race Street, located on The Parkway. Opening reception is Friday, March 29, 6:30 to 9 pm. This event is free and open to the public and is ADA accessible.
The 2019 MFA Thesis Exhibition, on view in the Goldie Paley Gallery, provides a glimpse into the issues that Moore’s talented graduate students in the MFA in Socially Engaged Studio Art program are currently exploring. The exhibition reinforces the College’s ongoing commitment to showcasing the diversity of work produced by its community and showcases works in fiber, sculpture, painting, mixed media, drawings and laser-cut documents.
The 2019 featured exhibition artists are Kathy Bachofer, Sara Berg, Tim Goldsmith, Steven Mogck and Rachel Yinger.
In conjunction with the 2019 MFA Thesis Exhibition, the candidates will host a “Lived Thesis” closing event with workshops and presentations on Thursday, April 11, 11 am – 1 pm.
MORE ABOUT THE FEATURED ARTISTS:
Kathy Bachofer focuses on traditional techniques and processes such as natural dyeing, weaving, quilt making, and embroidery to express connections often neglected. Bachofer graduated from Indiana University of Pennsylvania with a degree in computer science and from Cedar Crest College with a degree in art.
Sara Berg’s most recent work explores ideas of home in the urban landscape of Philadelphia through the use of water media and collage. Outside of the studio she is interested in the ways community and public art can facilitate social cohesion in gentrifying neighborhoods. She received a BFA in Painting and Drawing from the State University of New York (SUNY) at New Paltz.
Tim Goldsmith’s practice is rooted around working collaboratively and relationally, with diverse material and medium choices used from whatever is at hand and designed to serve the needs of particular content and dialogue in the work. Raised in Chattanooga, TN, he has a BA in Art with a focus in figurative sculpture from Covenant College in North Georgia.
Steven Mogck’s illustrations have been featured in numerous publications such as Marvel Comics and Time Out NY magazine. Mogck also worked as a storyboard artist for movies and television commercials while living in New York City. He studied illustration at Pratt Institute and has a BFA in Studio Arts from West Chester University.
Rachel Yinger creates paintings, prints and zines to explore different topics surrounding gender and sexuality. In her most recent work, she focuses on the visibility of queerness in pop culture. In 2014 she graduated from the Pennsylvania College of Art and Design with a BFA in Fine Art.

Throughout The Galleries, Moore’s first-year students, sophomores and juniors will exhibit their best work in Art Education, Fine Art, Graphic Design, Illustration, Interior Design, Photography & Digital Art and Fashion Design. Art collectors, art enthusiasts and advocates, designers and internship hosts can purchase student work through The Art Shop and preview emerging talent. The show runs through April 20, 2019.

Moore's Graduate Studies program in Socially-Engaged Art brings together artists and organizers to both critically and pragmatically engage in the discourses and practices concerned with art’s relationship to place, collaboration, ethics, material and interdisciplinary research.
