Fashion Design senior Mikayla Ahmad has been selected as one of the 20 finalists in the LEVI’s + ARTSTHREAD international design competition.
Ahmad’s design Tokyo Trippin’ was selected from among 357 entries from design schools around the world.
"I feel honored that my designs have been recognized in a community like Arts Thread," Ahmad said. "There is a very intimate environment here at Moore that is full of talented students, and I am proud that through my project, a global light has now been shed on our design institution."
Ahmad learned of her good fortune from a letter from Jonathan Cheung, head of design for Levi Strauss & Co.
“I’m amazed at the diversity of projects and the work has been of a very high standard,” he wrote.
In her entry, Ahmad wrote of Tokyo Trippin’:
“In the summer of 2017, Levi welcomed their third Haus of Strauss to a third location in Tokyo. Similar to Los Angeles and London, Tokyo became another location embedded into the heart of the company and its innovative nature. Due to the remarkable structure of the Haus of Strauss in Tokyo, I was left curious to investigate the happenings of Tokyo's denim culture outside of the Levi Haus. With the help of research, I explored Tokyo's graphic denim culture. Leading me to create a collection inspired by the Capital's relationship with denim, while also giving voice to their innovative graphics and prints.”
Ahmad’s design will be considered as the list is narrowed down to eight finalists in a second round of judging with the Levi’s Design Team. Those eight will be interviewed for two internship placements with Levi’s this summer.
Cheung wrote, “Know that you are all highly talented and can make it in this profession. Work hard, trust your instincts and always, always seek out every opportunity to learn."
Good luck to Mikayla!
