Game enthusiasts from Moore joined game jammers from all over the world in this year's Global Game Jam, held January 25 to January 28.
Teams from as far away as Turkey, Argentina, Norway, Germany, Egypt and Pakistan spent the weekend creating games based on the theme "What Home Means to You." As they worked, Global Game Jam live streamed from jam events in more than 40 cities around the world.
The local jam was held at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. Moore's team was called "The Blobbers." Moore students Judie Thai, Jennifer Tran, Ariana Williams and Sarah Barden created a game called "Day Job Blob." The game description: "Blob is a shape-shifting character that has to conform to the rigid geometry around him. Their world is judging and unwelcoming, but at home, Blob is free to be themself." You can play "Day Job Blob" by clicking here.
Thai served as the coder on the team, while the other students created the art. Music for the game was created by team member Zach Tridico. Alex Cole and Dan Halma made the sound effects.
"It's a great way to challenge yourself as a game developer," Thai said. "You meet new people, work with those you've never worked with before, and you learn about the upper limits of your skills."
Thai was the only Moore team member at the jam, communicating with the other teammates over a Discord server.
Global Game Jam 2019 is a non-profit, volunteer-run event that brings together people from all over the world to have a great time making innovative games and to learn from each other.
