Moore College of Art & Design has named three women, including an alumna and mother of an alumna, to the Board of Managers.
Kia Weatherspoon '10 and Leslie G. London became members at the September 22, 2020, Board meeting, and Shelley R. Smith joined as of the December 8, 2020 meeting.
A veteran of the U.S. Air Force, Weatherspoon is a 2020 Distinguished Alumna and an accomplished interior designer who founded the Washington DC-based firm Determined by Design after earning her BFA in Interior Design. She focuses on affordable housing and senior living spaces.
"I wanted to give back to an institution that poured into me, and I also want to be a part of the future greatness and legacy building," she said.
Weatherspoon has created an endowment that will provide financial support to a Moore Interior Design student during their summer internship. She has been recognized as a 2020 HiP Designer for Good by Interior Design magazine, is a member of the Washington Business Journal’s 2020 40 under 40 Class, and is the recipient of the International Interior Design Association's 2020 Anna Hernandez/Luna Textiles Visionary Award.
London, mother of Moore Fashion Design grad Symone Burgess '19, is a member of McManimon, Scotland & Baumann LLC in Roseland, NJ. She currently serves as general, special or labor counsel for several municipalities and municipal utilities authorities. She concentrates in the areas of municipal law, public contracts law, employment and labor law, redevelopment law, construction law, and wastewater and solid waste and recycling planning, implementation, enforcement and regulation. She is a member of the New Jersey State Bar Association and the American Bar Association.
Of Moore, London said, "I've always admired how there is a dedication to women, and in furthering and strengthening women." A graduate of the all-girls school St. Thomas Aquinas in Bronx, NY, London said her daughter appreciated Moore's smaller size and lower student-to-faculty ratio. Symone Burgess is a technical design assistant for Capelli New York. London's other daughter, Alexa Burgess, is a marriage and family counselor with St. Peter’s Healthcare System.
Smith is a partner with Archer Attorneys at Law. She is a managing attorney with eight years of law firm management experience, and is general counsel to a $6 billion municipal corporation. She has 25 years of civil trial, risk management and counseling experience. Smith joined Archer following a distinguished career in public service for the City of Philadelphia, most recently serving eight years as city solicitor during Michael Nutter’s mayoral tenure.
Smith serves on the board of the Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania. She is a member of the Pennsylvania Bar Association and the Philadelphia Bar Association, and she is on the Southeastern Pennsylvania advisory board of Pennsylvanians for Modern Courts, and is a member of the board of directors of the Support Center for Child Advocates.
