Moore students enjoyed a picnic lunch and birthday cake in celebration of the 218th birthday of Moore founder Sarah Peter.

Moore President Cecelia Fitzgibbon led a chorus of "Happy Birthday" before a large cake was cut. Part of the celebration was held indoors because of the chilly weather, but students enjoyed games of giant-size checkers, Connect Four, and jousted with large padded poles in a padded ring set up on Race Street.

Sarah Peter Day honors Sarah Worthington Peter, who founded the Philadelphia School of Design for Women in 1848 in a spare room of her house on 3rd and Spruce Streets. The mission of the school was to “instruct young girls, who have to support themselves, in the arts of drawing, design, and wood engraving, in the belief that they will be able to succeed in these branches of home industry, not only for their own benefit, but also for the benefit of American manufacturers.”
