Moore College of Art & Design will present West Philadelphia Orchestra outside the College's main entrance at 1916 Race Street, Located on The Parkway on Friday, October 26, in conjunction with the closing celebration of The Parkway’s 100th anniversary. October 26 marks 100 years to the day when the Ben Franklin Parkway opened completely for the first time. WPO will play from 6 – 8 pm, The Galleries at Moore will be open until 9 pm and The Art Shop will be open until 7 pm. This is a FREE event.
West Philadelphia Orchestra is a brass band inspired by the Romani brass "orkestars" and "fanfares" of Eastern Europe. Known for stellar musicianship and dynamic live shows, the band’s sound is raw, raucous and extremely kinetic. You may find them on stages, street corners and wedding celebrations throughout the Philadelphia region, pumping out their combination of Balkan, klezmer, punk and banging beats. With driving percussion, pirouetting tuba, wailing reeds and blaring trumpets, WPO's sound hits hard and lifts the spirits.
The celebration at Moore also features bird sculptures by Moore alumna Darla Jackson in Aviator Park, located across the street from Moore; caricature drawings and face painting by Moore students; and hot chocolate and snacks for sale. The festivities coincide with The Parkway Soirée, a huge block party running from 5 – 10 pm.
