The relocated Margaret Minik Writers Studio was officially launched September 18 with lunch and Moore faculty talking about their writing and research processes.
About 30 students, faculty and staff gathered first in the new studio, then moved to the new Learning Lab within the newly redesigned Connelly Library. Also in attendance was Board of Managers member Meg Johnson, daughter of writer Margaret Minik, for whom the studio is dedicated. The studio was moved from the Student Affairs area in Stahl Hall to the library.
Maya Pindyck, assistant professor, Liberal Arts, talked about her writing process, including creating rituals that jumpstart the creative process and using familiar and comfortable writing materials.
Fashion Design Chair Nasheli Ortiz discussed how she does research in preparation of creating new garments. She told attendees it took two years of research before she created a dress made from 3D printed fabric that only reveals its message when seen with 3D glasses. She will be showing the garment in October during Paris Fashion Week.
Ortiz also stressed the importance of writing.
"One thing they never tell you in school -- you're going to be writing all your life," she said. "You need to do artist statements and write grant proposals all the time."
